Oftentimes, people look in the phone directory and simply call the first person on the list when looking for a good or service.  This is not typically a good idea.  While it’s probably fine if you just need someone to mow your lawn, it’s not a wise thing to do when you are searching for a doctor to do surgery on your eyes.

Finding a good eye surgeon in your area is extremely important and you have to treat the search as such. You may have no problems being referred to places that are good quality an hour or two outside your hometown as this seems to be the norm when someone is looking for a doctor or surgeon. The idea though is to find someone close by so that you will not have to waste so much time traveling.

Plus, if you develop any complications after surgery, like infections or inflammation, you will want to make sure you surgeon is just a stone’s throw away.  So, how can you find a good eye surgeon?  By now you realize that you can’t just go with billboards, ads, or the local TV commercials.

Just because a surgeon has the money to place an advertisement in the yellow pages does not mean he is a good doctor, so make sure you squash that idea right away.  But in all seriousness, how can you distinguish between a good surgeon and a bad one if you’ve never done this before?

It’s not hard at all to find information about malpractice lawsuits or ethics complaints against a specific surgeon.  Bad news makes the rounds quickly, so if this information is out there, you’ll most certainly find it.  Once you’ve narrowed your list of eye surgeons down to a few that are of interest to you, just set up an initial appointment with them.  This will provide you with a lot of information about the surgeon.

If you just don’t feel right about the surgeon, then you can always walk away and never worry about setting up another important.  On the other hand, if you feel comfortable with them, then by all means ask for some references and for information on their qualifications.  Any eye surgeon that refuses to provide this information isn’t one that you should choose.  Keep plugging away, and you’ll eventually stumble across the right eye surgeon for your needs.
