LASIK and Healing Progress of Your Eyesight

Only if our optical organs were made of inorganic matter, we would be able to adjust all of them to an ideal vision every time. But eyes consist of active tissue. And as with all biological processes, each distinct eye does not follow identical healing response. The unique healing reaction of the patient’s eyes cannot be determined beforehand with absolute certainty. And the way the healing of the eyes progresses will significantly shape the result of the patient’s improvement in vision at the end. Moreover, your eye’s healing development, unfortunately does not have a significance to how fast other parts of your body heal and neither can it be pre-determined by means of test.

In lasik eye surgery there is lesser statistical variation in the eyes’ healing response. The healing pattern varies more in surface eye surgery such as PRK, as opposed to LASIK where deeper tissue healing is involved.

People who have received the LASIK treatment follow a more predictable restorative response. As the eye mends during the starting days or months, there is a slight likelihood for the eye to revert to its starting characteristics: nearsighted eyes will drift slightly back to near-sightedness again, and farsighted eyes will drift slightly back toward farsightedness. Medical professionals take this propensity of the eye during healing into account, and will make a small over-correction initially. As a result, most people who have undergone LASIK will notice that their vision sharpens even during the initial days or months of their mending period.

There will also be patients who may also manifest a treatment recovery pattern known as regression’, wherein the optical organs decline in visual quality to a much larger degree than is normal. These patients may have excellent vision during the initial healing weeks, which then retrogressed into eye improvements much below expectations. Luckily, under-corrections are very easily re-adjusted with a re-treatment.

Considerable exposure to ultraviolet light, like from the sun or from tanning salons, during the starting 6 months after laser vision correction may lead to a number of individuals to undergo regression. It is essential for subjects of the LASIK procedure to protect their eyesight from high amounts of UV light by sporting sunglasses when they have to go outside when the sun is strong during the first six months subsequent to the procedure, though small quantities of exposure to sunlight will not be harmful to your recovery.

If you do the following sports which entail a great deal of ultraviolet exposure: skiing and other high-altitude sports; swimming, and rowing,; or just hanging-out in the lake; it is particularly essential for you to safeguard your sensitive eyes by donning protective eyewear during these occasions. It is also important to understand that, excessive ultraviolet light exposure is damaging to other parts of the eye, since it can lead to cataracts and damage the retina. Therefore, it is prudent for everyone, whether or not they have or have not in the past six months had excimer laser eye surgery, to shade their eyes from the destructive effects of excessive sun.

Prior to having this procedure, you should realize that each person heals differently, and these variances significantly shape your final result. This is a strong argument why it’s extremely vital to select the medical professional who will perform the operation very carefully. Even if the instrument is one of best in the industry, it is still the physician who will use the laser and then manage your healing response afterwards. You also have to be sure you have a good understanding of your after operation care instructions; so that you will do the essential things to increase your chances of achieving the best eyesight improvement possible.

  • You must wear sunglasses to prevent damage to your eyes. While some contact lenses provide UV protection, they don’t cover your whole eye, so you still need sunglasses.
