Prescription Sunglasses – What They Can Do For You
You no doubt know the experience: you are driving at high speed around a bend in late afternoon. Suddenly the sun is right in front of you; you grope around trying to find your sunglasses. You have 2 seconds to find them before driving off the road or hitting another vehicle. This is where prescription sunglasses could well save your life.
Another scenario: you are on the beach, wearing your high fashion tinted contact lenses. But you don’t want to swim with them – they might get lost. Swimming with contact lenses is a bad idea anyway – it could lead to eye infections. Although they are tinted, they also simply don’t offer the same level of UV protection than prescription sunglasses.
The answer? Prescription sunglasses. All the protection against glare and UV that you can ever want, while still being able to see where you go.
Prescription sunglasses can be worn outdoors whenever you want. On the beach. Reading at the pool. Driving. In short anywhere where you will be exposed to direct sunlight and yet need corrective lenses as well.
Nowadays you also get photochromatic tint lenses. They adjust to light conditions automatically. When you are outdoors, exposed to direct sunlight, they will turn darker and once you go back indoors they will become lighter again. This is ideal if you don’t want to be putting on and taking off sunglasses all the time – such as when you are spending a weekend at your beach house.
In terms of available lens types, you should have no problem in getting what you need. Prescription sunglasses are available with multi-focals, bi-focals, for reading glasses or for driving. In short to correct any eye condition that can be corrected by ordinary glasses.
Should you be an active swimmer you can even have prescription goggles designed specifically for your eye condition, providing the same level of UV protection than other sunglasses.
As far as frame styles go, the sky is the limit. Whatever style or fashion is available in ordinary sunglasses is mostly also available in prescription sunglasses. Remember to choose a frame that suits your facial structure in terms of color, size and shape.
You might have some problems if you want wraparound sunglasses. This would depend on the lens prescription you require. If you have very weak eyesight for example, you need very strong lenses which might not be available in this shape.
As far as the material for the lens goes, glass still delivers the best visual quality, but they are not very popular any longer. The reason is that glass lenses are relatively heavy and could also cut your face if you are involved in an accident. Alternative materials are Trivex, plastic and polycarbonate, amongst others.
Since the color of the lens or the shade of darkness makes no difference to the level of UV protection it provides, you are free to choose any shade or color for your prescription sunglasses as long as you are sure they provide 100% protection against the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
