What Are The Advantages Of Separate Sunglasses Vs Transition Lenses?

If you wear prescription glasses, you have a few choices to protect your eyes from the dangerous rays of the sun. Many people must wear corrective lenses when driving. Unless you are wearing contact lenses, this means that you cannot wear normal sunglasses. Instead, you must choose clip on glasses, which leave a lot to be desired, have a separate pair of prescription sunglasses or choose transition lenses. The following information is to help you make the choice of separate sunglasses vs transition lenses.

Transition lenses get darker when you are in the sun. Then when you go back inside and do not need the darker lenses, they change back toward clear. This effect prevents you from having to change glasses when going from inside to outside.

Your glasses do the changing for you. You will not be fumbling for glasses when you are driving the car. You do not have to change from your sunglasses to the regular glasses if you are driving at dusk. When you are shopping, there is not the constant changing from one set of glasses to the other as you go from store to car to store.

However, there are some disadvantages to transition lenses.

There is a time delay in the changing of transition sunglasses. This can mean several minutes outside without dark glasses or several minutes inside with dark glasses as you wait for the transition. This may cause problems seeing during the transition time.

If you want or need dark sunglasses, then transitions will not get as dark as separate sunglasses. Persons with light sensitivity sometimes require that sunglasses be tinted as dark as possible. Transition lenses may not be enough to protect from the effects of bright light when you walk out into the sun.

Transitions lenses may cost more than regular glasses and regular sunglasses. This can be especially true if you have vision insurance. Many people with vision insurance are entitled to a spare pair of glasses that can be tinted to make sunglasses. Most insurance plans will not pay for the extra cost of tinting or for the extra cost of transition lenses. If cost is a factor, be sure that you check out the cost of both options before making your final decision.

There is another option, not as well known as clip ons, but another option never the less. Fitovers are sunglasses that can be worn over prescription glasses. They’re polarized too, and less expensive than the transitional glasses.
