A daily care routine is an essential part of owning Acuvue Oasys contact lenses. There are a few basic care needs that one should be aware before using these contact lenses. If you are unable to follow a routine, unable to insert and remove the lenses, or have another person insert and remove the lenses, then it would be wise to rethink the need or desire for contact lenses. If you are great at a routine then there are a few basics you will need to follow.

Before you go home for the first time with contact lenses, make sure you insert and remove them while you are still at the Optometrist or eye care specialists office as this will help clear up any questions. Before handling the lenses make sure your hands are washed and dried thoroughly. A common mistake that can be made is putting the lens in your mouth to lubricate or moisten it, or using tap water to clean or moisten the lens. Unfortunately, this could lead to accidentally swallowing the lens or dropping it into the sink drain. Also, tap water contains impurities that can contaminate the lens or could lead to eye infections, possibly even injuring the eye.

The first time you purchase a pair of lenses, be sure to get a recommended cleaning and disinfection routine as well as instructions about care, handling, and cleaning. The eye care specialist will be able to teach you about proper care procedures and will suggest the best products to use for the type of lenses you have. When you remove your lenses, they must be cleaned and disinfected before you put them back in your eyes.

In order to continue safe and comfortable wear of the lenses, it is important that you first clean, rinse, and disinfect your lenses after each removal. Be sure to do this by using the lens care products and procedures that have been originally recommended by your eye care specialist. Ideally, it is best to form the habit of cleaning of the lenses as soon as they are removed from your eyes. Cleaning and rinsing are needed to remove mucus, secretions, films and protein deposits that may have built up on your lenses during wear.

Always follow the set routine and use the recommended products to avoid any serious eye problems. If you wish to change products for some reason, it is highly recommended to consult with your eye care specialist about the product before doing so. There may be many reasons why you should not or cannot safely use the new product. Also, keep track of expiry dates on lenses and all the lens care products. Do not mix lens care systems with other products because not all products will be compatible with others.

Basic Cleaning Rules

- Always clean the same lens first to avoid mix-ups when the time comes to insert them again. – Always follow the instructions provided on the cleaning solution label and from the eye care specialist. – After the cleaning is completed, rinse the lens with the recommended rinsing solution to remove the cleaning solution as well as any mucus and film from the lens surface. – Once the process is completed, put the lens into the correct chamber of your lens storage case.

Disinfecting

- After the cleaning is completed, disinfect the lenses using the system recommended by your eye care specialist, following the instructions given and /or written on the product label. – When using hydrogen peroxide lens care systems, the lenses must first be neutralized before wearing. – Be sure to thoroughly rinse the lenses with a fresh solution before inserting and wearing your lenses. Take caution with lenses that are chemically disinfected, as they could absorb ingredients found in the solution. These chemicals could irritate the eye, so to avoid this, thoroughly rinse the lenses in a fresh and sterile saline solution just before inserting the lens in the eye.

Proper care of your Acuvue Oasys contact lens is a necessary responsibility. Cleaning is an important part of lens care. Improper cleaning can eventually ruin the lenses. To maintain fresh lenses, they must be cleaned, rinsed, and disinfected daily.

In early times, sunglasses were barely useful for the purpose of keeping out the brightness of the sun. Bits of smoked quartz held by hand, and then later held to the face by a crude frame, they were hardly the practical fashion accessory that they have become today. Yet with the invention of the polarized lens, by Edwin H. Land, sunglasses went from keeping out the sun to keeping our eyesight healthy by blocking out harmful UV rays. To understand what a polarized lens is, we need to understand how polarized sunglasses work.

In the 1930s the Army Air Corp approached a well known company, Bausch and Lomb, to research and develop an anti-glare style sunglasses for pilots. They came up with a design that made the frame slightly droop to maximize shielding of the pilots eyes. Then they incorporated a dark green tint which would absorb the yellow band of the light spectrum. The dark green tint filters and diffuses the concentrated light waves, which eliminates 99% of reflecting glare. The end result is a reduction of annoying and /or dangerous glare.

The way in which the polarized lens works to assist your sight is that it blocks the horizontally polarized light from a surface with a vertically oriented polarizer that is integrated into the lens. Surfaces such as still water, flat pavement, or even glass and shiny metals can reflect a large amount of light into the eyes which makes it difficult to focus properly on the surface and the items around it. This can cause a person to be distracted or even not see items that become hidden behind the bright light. Using polarized sunglasses removes the glare by bouncing it off your sunglasses allowing you to actually see through the glare.

Sometimes polarized lenses may react poorly with LCD (liquid crystal display) lighting commonly found in car dashboards or on bank machine displays at automated tellers. In fact, depending on the angle of the screen display, the LCD display can become almost invisible. This is of course is something that needs to be explored before sitting behind the wheel of your car.

Polarized sunglasses are no longer just for pilots or drivers. They are now part of an ever growing group of sports enthusiasts for many types of sports events including many outdoor winter activities such as skiing. However, polarized lenses sometimes do not work well on reflective snow surfaces, so be sure to try out the sunglasses you plan to use for your outdoor snow day activities.

A Test for Polarized Lenses

If you wish to test your sunglasses to make sure they are actually polarized, find a surface that is reflecting a large amount of light such as a still lake on a sunny day. Find the brightest or most reflective part of the lakes surface, and then put on your polarized sunglasses and look at the same area of the lake. While looking at the spot, turn your head to the right and left observing any differences. If you see that the lens gets light and then dark or, that there is a significant reduction in the glare, you have confirmed that your sunglasses are polarized.

There are also polarized photo-chromic lenses now on the market that are capable of changing the amount of light they let in. This is a great asset for people who are frequently in and out of shaded areas or in and out of buildings during the course of the day.

With the increased health risks associated with UV rays, polarized sunglasses are a healthy choice for everyone.

The wearing of sunglasses has become as popular and as common as wearing such articles of clothing as hats, ties, and gloves. Sunglasses are often considered a necessity more than an accessory. Centuries ago they were worn only by the rich and even into the early 1900s only those of fame and fortune were seen wearing these special spectacles.

Tales of “sun cheaters”, among other unusual names, were spoken of back in the time of the Roman Empire, when the Emperor would cover his eyes with bits of emerald to help shade the sun from his vision. Obviously the efforts that were utilized diminished the sun but did not protect the eyes from harmful rays. They actually lessened the clarity of what people were viewing.

Sometime in 12th Century China, the first sunglasses were a crude slab of smoked quartz that was made for only the very rich. The quartz slab soon progressed to a slab with a roughly shaped frame to help hold the quartz to the users face. Not only were these handy items used to block out the sun but they were also used to hide emotions from others when speaking with them. This was particularly handy for judges of that time, giving them an air of detachment from the topic being discussed as well as keeping their feelings hidden while questioning the accused.

As time went on, so did the progression of the appearance of sunglasses. Circa 1400, sunglasses were darkened and introduced into Italy via the Chinese. In the 18th century a man named James Ayscough was experimenting with sunglasses but not to help keep out the suns rays but to help with improving vision for those with poor or failing eye sight. He believed that by changing the color of the lenses to a blue/green tint, he could help correct certain vision conditions.

But sunglasses did not become popular until the early 1920s, when the stars and starlets of Hollywood began using them to shield their eyes from the stage lights and the cameras blinding flashbulbs. Mass production of sunglasses came about in the late 1920s, when a man named Sam Foster started his company, Foster Grant, in Atlantic City where the beach goers were a steady stream of sunglass sales..

The Army Air Corps were at the forefront of sunglass development when they approached an optical firm by the name of Bausch and Lomb to create effective eyeglasses to protect pilots from high altitude glare. In the mid 1930s Polaroid filters had been invented by Edwin H. Land (founder of the Polaroid Corporation) which now changed sunglasses from being an item to keep out the sun but also to that of a health aid because they now also protected the eyes from harmful UV rays. By the late 1930s when World War II was on the brink of exploding, anti-glare aviator glasses were being made for the fliers and a year later the same sunglass technology was available for the general public.

By the 1960s, sunglasses rose in popularity as a stunning fashion statement. In the 1970s sales were still steadily climbing and many fashion designers and stars of stage and screen came out with their own designs and styles. Sunglasses are attractive, practical, and are now available in every imaginable shape, size, and color. They are even available for infants and seniors and every age group in between.
