Many people wear sunglasses because they are fashionable, but how many do you think wear them specifically for UV protection? It seems as though most people wear sunglasses during the summer months when the sun appears to be brightest and hottest, but in reality sunglasses should be worn year-round. With all of the various styles, shapes, and colors available, you should have no problem finding a pair (or a few pairs) of sunglasses that suits your tastes as well as your budget. One of the most important things to look for when buying sunglasses is its UV-Ray protection abilities.

Another important factor is how well it cuts down on glare from the sun and other sources of bright light. This is especially necessary while driving because of the risk of accidents due to your vision being impaired. Glares can come from the reflection of the sun radiating off of the vehicle in front of you, the blinding white of snow, even the windows and metal decor from buildings. If your eyes are not properly protected, glares will most likely make you squint in order to see more clearly, and can also cause headaches. There are sunglasses available that have been created to reduce glare which is great for people who drive often. And by ensuring that you won’t suffer the effects of glare in your eyes, you won’t have to worry about accidents related to it.

The most serious issue your eyes will experience, is the intense UV radiation from the sun. When reflected, sunlight can become more intense, and long term exposure to UV rays can cause photokeratitis. This is a reversible condition that is essentially a sunburn on your eyes. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts can result from excessive UV exposure to your eyes.

Be sure that before you purchase a pair of sunglasses that they truly meet your needs. You want to buy sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays, and you also want them to look good and sit comfortably on your face. If you have a hard time figuring out what the UV protection factor is on the sunglasses you are interested in, don’t hesitate to ask your eye care professional or a sales associate to help you – that’s what they’re there for! Also keep in mind that the larger the lenses are, the better more effective they’ll be at protecting your eyes. Bigger lenses will block out much more light than smaller lenses.

And choosing lenses that are darker in shade will reduce more glare without interfering with your ability to clearly see street lights and other important objects. You can test the effectiveness of a pair of sunglasses by looking at yourself in the mirror with them on. If you can see your eyes through your lenses, it would be wise to opt for something darker. If you have children, make sure their eyes are protected as well. Given the fact that children tend to play hard, it’s probably a good idea to opt for polycarbonate lenses which are much more durable than glass lenses.
